Warehouse Management Services

Scanners are typically used in warehouse and production environments to increase the efficiency of identifying items and recording the transactions that track their movements and usage. Before purchasing scanners, two separate set of criteria should be considered: technical capabilities and environmental compatibility. Both are discussed below.

Warehouse Management Scanner Requirements and Recommendations

There are many choices of scanners, and like most hardware these days, many of the variations depend on different components. Different models contain different processor speeds, memory, wireless compatibility, and operating systems. The table below lists the scanners Deacom supports from a technical standpoint. Regardless of other technical options, a scanner with a 53-key alpha numeric keypad is recommended.

Model Processor

RAM

Operating System

Preferred

Zebra MC9300

2.2 GHz

4 GB

Android 11 (or Android 14 - beginning with Deacom 17.03.009 & 17.04.008)

Zebra TC21

1.8 GHz

3-4 GB

Android 10

Zebra TC73 (Beginning with Deacom 17.03.009 & 17.04.008)

Note: The scanner operating systems listed above are those that are officially supported by Deacom.

Hardware notes and vendors

  • Processor – higher processor speeds generally leads to faster processing
  • RAM – higher RAM generally leads to increased speed
  • Wireless - wireless networks must be configured to 802.11a, b, g, or n requirements

Below is some information on a contact for a scanner hardware company we have recommended in the past. Please note this is only a suggestion. We do not have any partnership with this company.

"AbeTech Barcoding and RFID Solutions is a Premium Level Integrator for all things barcoding. We have been in the barcoding industry for over 20 years and in that time have developed and nurtured a strong relationship with industry leading hardware manufacturers giving us the lowest pricing in the industry. In our 20+ years of service, AbeTech has developed programs that tie into the Hardware we provide including: AbeTech RMS (Over the phone service) and Device Lifecycle Management (A comprehensive service to help with mobile device deployment). Hardware is not the only thing AbeTech works with. We also help companies procure Label Printers and the accompanying consumables and survey/install WLAN networks in their office and warehouse space. No vertical is too tall for AbeTech. Please let me know how I can help you today."

Scanner environmental compatibility

Environmental compatibility refers to the type of environment the scanners will be used from both a physical and process perspective. The list below are factors to consider when selecting a scanner:

  • Operating temperature
  • Charging temperature
  • Storage temperature
  • Humidity
  • Ability to withstand fumes
  • Required ruggedness (from potential drops)
  • Form factor (wearable v hand held)
  • Electrostatic discharge
  • Data capture requirements:
    • Range (proximity of the scanner to the item being scanned)
    • Barcode v 2D

If you still have questions or concerns regarding your WMS hardware requirements, please contact your applicable Deacom representative.

Warehouse Management printer recommendations

If purchasing new warehouse management printers, Zebra printers are recommended. However, any printer that has Windows print drivers will be compatible with Deacom's warehouse management system.

License requirements

A valid SQL Server license is required for each device or user accessing the host/automation server. The specifications, per Microsoft, indicate that in order to access a licensed SQL Server, each user or device must have a SQL Server CAL (Client Access License) that is the same version or newer than the SQL Server software version being accessed. For example, to access a server running SQL Server 2012 software, a user needs a SQL Server 2012 CAL. In Deacom, if multiple scanner users are connected to the Deacom WMS host, then one SQL Server CAL license will be required for each user.

Note: The use of hardware or software that reduces the number of devices or users that directly access or use the software (multiplexing/pooling) does not reduce the number of CALs required.
